Drought resistant shrubs
Design an Eco-Friendly Yard with Xeriscaping
One option for the softscape of the yard is to use Xeriscaping. Instead of just choosing any plants based on how they look, this technique looks at what’s naturally in the location and what can be used in the yard to provide a more natural, easy to care for yard. The plants used in a xeriscaped yard will differ based on where the property is located, as it takes advantage of what grows in the area and, therefore, will require fewer resources to grow. This is basically desert landscaping, and the area we live in is close enough to being a desert.

When something is grown in a location it wouldn’t normally grow in, the plant tends to require a lot more care. It may require more water than other plants, special care during the coldest or hottest months, or added nutrients. Growing tropical plants in an area that gets cold winters likely means specialized care during the colder season as the plants simply aren’t used to the local weather. Plants that are made for tropical locations also will require a lot more care – and more water – in places that are more prone to drought, as the plant simply won’t get what it needs naturally.

Instead, when a property owner uses xeriscaping for their yard, they stick to the types of plants that naturally grow in the area and will do well with minimal care. The plants are used to the temperatures in the area as well as the amount of rainwater, so after they are initially transplanted and watered, they won’t require much care at all and will thrive.

This helps create a garden that always looks great but with a lot less work than a garden with flowers that aren’t naturally found in the area. It can also help the property owner conserve resources, as they won’t need to water as often or worry as much about adding different nutrients to the soil for the plants to get what they need.
