Aeration Services to Help Grass Grow

Thatch is something that can start to build up in lawns as the grass is cut. The dead grass does provide nutrients to the grass that is growing, but after some time, it can start to form thatch between the green grass that can be seen and the roots growing below ground.

When the thatch gets to be more than ½ an inch thick, dethatching is needed to give the grass room to breathe. Lawn Aeration can help prevent thatch, as well as help with soil compaction that could prevent the grass roots from being able to grow and get the nutrients and air they need.

Two main types of aeration are spiking and core aeration. Spiking is simply poking holes in the soil, but this only works a little bit and is not sufficient in most cases. Instead, core aeration is used to remove small plugs of soil. This allows the fertilizers to get into the soil to provide the nutrients the grass needs and helps water get deeper into the ground.

Core aeration can be done yearly, though the timing of it is important to get the most from it. In most cases, spring is going to be the best time to aerate the lawn, and it may not be needed every year. Instead, for most lawns, every five years or as needed is better.

Aeration is done using specialized equipment. The aerator is moved around the yard and used to pull plugs out of the soil that are around two to three inches deep. The plugs should be removed about every three inches throughout the yard. Watering before aeration can make the job easier, but it’s not a good idea to water to the point the soil is saturated and muddy.
